You should consult a gastroenterologist if you experience persistent acidity, stomach pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, blood in stool, or other digestive problems.
A gastroenterologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the digestive system, including acidity, GERD, ulcers, IBS, liver disease, fatty liver, hepatitis, pancreatitis, piles, and inflammatory bowel disease.
A general physician treats a wide range of health conditions, while a gastroenterologist focuses specifically on diseases of the digestive system, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and intestines.
Occasional acidity is common, but frequent heartburn, chest burning, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms that interfere with daily life may require evaluation by a gastroenterologist.
Stomach pain can result from indigestion, acidity, infections, ulcers, gallstones, constipation, IBS, food intolerance, or other digestive disorders.
GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a condition in which stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the food pipe, causing heartburn, chest discomfort, and irritation.
Common symptoms may include fatigue, abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight changes, and abnormal liver function tests. Many people may not experience symptoms in the early stages.
You should consult a doctor if constipation lasts for several weeks, causes significant discomfort, is associated with bleeding, or occurs alongside unexplained weight loss.
IBS may cause abdominal pain, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, or alternating bowel habits without structural damage to the intestines.
Blood in stool should always be evaluated by a doctor, as it may indicate hemorrhoids, fissures, infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or more serious digestive conditions.
An endoscopy is a procedure that uses a thin flexible tube with a camera to examine the digestive tract. It helps diagnose conditions such as ulcers, GERD, bleeding, infections, and stomach disorders.
